"Security-testing devices don't traditionally measure performance," says Avivi, who uses BreakingPoint to test Juniper's SRX Series Services Gateway appliances. "We started with BreakingPoint because of security and very quickly learned it could help us do stress testing under real traffic conditions."
Read MoreYou should always plan for your worst case, says Des Wilson, CEO of BreakingPoint, a network testing device provider. That doesn't mean buy for your worst case, but you should know what your upper bound is. Wilson says that a common mistake organizations make when testing is to run a simulation that fails to closely approximate demand levels they will actually experience. It’s not just running a simple web-based protocol through there, says Wilson. Run 100 different applications through there, just like you see it on the network.
Read MoreAccording to BreakingPoint, Storm CTM essentially takes an x-ray of network and data center devices to find all of the different stress fractures, or problems in the system, and reports back with an overall score that allows the user to determine where vulnerabilities exist before they are exploited.
Read MoreCapable of massive simultaneous DDoS attacks, and attacks against switches, routers, servers, firewalls, and other similar aspects of system networks, the Storm CTM generates a sort of benchmark score after it has done its work. Using the score, a company running the machine can get an overall sense of the security of their network, and from there, use the results to help plan for enhancing security.
Read MoreBreakingPoint Systems on Monday will unveil a high-end network equipment testing product that measures the overall security and resiliency of a network to attack and heavy traffic by performing full-blown simulated attacks and applications: the new Storm CTM (Cyber Tomography Machine) also provides a scoring system for how the infrastructure performed under the duress of the tests.
